Spec Ops - wilderness adventures!
Sep. 4th, 2013 10:27 pm7th - 8th - Heading out! Woods woods woods.
9th - 10th -Exploring Loki's creepy trapped castle. SOMETHING ELSE INTERESTING???
11th - MUTANT BADGER ATTACK
12th - The last bit of returning to the city.
Things that can happen out in the woods at any time - eating the wrong thing, winding up in a higher radiation area (Nate's bringing dosimeters but there's room for foraging groups or inattention or whatever).
The castle is full of traps because Loki is an asshole. There is a giant metal golem too, but unless someone with magic decides reanimating it would be a great idea it will just stand there looking menacing but not doing anything.
Mutant badgers are the size and weight of large dogs, and fairly vicious. Also, they have claws. And bite. If not properly treated the bites will probably get infected. They'll be disturbing a sett, so there will be more than one badger from more than one direction, though once characters are out of the territory they won't be pursued.

Thank the Bright Lady there's another adult around. Particularly one he doesn't have to explain the mess that is his past to.

Apr. 25th, 2013 02:40 am"Nathan Christopher Summers was born into a battle. And his life was a war.
All the time I knew him, he grabbed sleep in ten-minute stretches. Ate with his back to a wall. Never sat still long enough to make an easy target.
You know what I mean. All of you know what I mean. He was a soldier. To the last ounce and inch of him, Cable was a soldier.
And there are three blessings a soldier prays for. To fight for things that matter - things that are real. To find comrades who he loves and trusts, to fight alongside him. And to die on his feet.
My dad got three for three. So don't cry for him. N-nobody. Nobody needs to cry for Nathan Summers."

Character NAME: Nathan Summers | Cable
Canon & MEDIUM: Marvel 616 (Comics)
Canon PULL-POINT: AVX: Consequences 5
Character AGE: Early 60s
Character ABILITIES:
Combat - Nathan grew up a soldier in a world filled with war. Most of his days have been spent in combat or in training, and as such, he's skilled at hand-to-hand fighting, and has probably attained some mastery of basically every single-person weapon invented before the 38th century, though he does appear to have a certain fondness for really big guns. He's as strong as he looks, and more agile than one would expect of someone with his bulk. Because of his starting canon point, he's not at 100%, due to the after-effects of having the techno-organic virus removed from his system, though he's nothing if not adaptable.
Telepathy - Like his mother, Nathan has the power of telepathy. At his strongest, he can read minds, force control over memories and actions, and implant suggestions. He can also 'send' thoughts to other people who aren't blocked from him as well. He also used to use his ability heavily as a sort of telepathic ‘cloak’ - making people think they’re seeing something that isn’t there (ie, normal flesh instead of his techno-organic arm) or having them not see something that is (an argument over a mission in crowded restaurant, for example) Because he's worn his body and gift to hell and back, he's nowhere near his strongest (and likely will not reach his strongest, unless someone actually manages to force him to take a few weeks of rest). He'll be able to sense nearby unshielded thoughts, as well as do a 'live body' count without needing line of sight, and also be able to send messages over a few miles. Physical contact makes it easier to both 'read' and 'send' thoughts.
Telekinesis - Along with the psionic gift of telepathy, Nate also has telekinetic ability - his full potential is on the level of 'world-destroying', but he was never properly trained as a telekinetic, and the strain he's put on his power and his body over the years has pretty much ensured he'll never reach that potential. His realized levels are much lower - he can use this to move object as large as a truck, create shields, or hold things together that are falling apart (like a room or building). With the proper weapon, he can also harness his telekinetic energy more directly as blasts. As with his telepathic abilities, his telekinetic abilities are a bit burnt out at his canon point, and he'll start off just being able to summon small, not particularly strong shields, and move and deflect small objects.
Character HISTORY: http://marvel.wikia.com/Nathan_Summers_%28Earth-616%29
Character PERSONALITY: When he was born, Nate was marked with a destiny, and it's been that destiny that's shaped the key aspects of both his life and his personality since then. Having been thrust into a world filled with war, Nathan learned the life of a soldier at a young age, and it's still the role that comes most easily to him. From his 'foster parents', he learned how to run, how to hide, how to survive when the odds are against you - and importantly, he also learned compassion. From Clan Askani, he learned to fight, to control his mutant powers, and to lead. As the Chosen One, the Askani'Son, he was appointed to lead by prophecy, and while to lead in war is a heavy burden to bear, he accepted it unquestioningly.
He made an excellent leader - bold and stubborn enough to keep fighting against overwhelming odds, and compassionate enough to never let the war break his spirit entirely and turn him into a monster. That compassion, however, made life hurt, and combined with his stubbornness, it led to a reckless streak that never died. He grew up with the belief that his birth-parents abandoned him to the future, and when he was thirteen, his 'foster parents' were forced to return to their own timeline, abandoning him again. While he managed to find love - and a strong, solid love that he's never let go of, at that - during the fighting, his wife was killed in battle, and his son taken, tortured, and brainwashed by his enemy. This combination of losses has had a lasting impact on how Nate forms bonds with other people. When he first returns to the present day, he keeps himself somewhat apart from both the X-Men and his team. It's easier to slip into the well-worn role of the soldier, to not let people in too close so the pain of losing them isn't as great. It literally takes him years to tell Domino that he loves her. At the same time, though, being in the somewhat less war-torn present, it becomes clear to him that he needs these bonds with others to remind him to be more than just a soldier - even if he usually has a great deal of trouble articulating his feelings about them.
And it is the way that he cares about people, whether it's one of his best friends or just a soldier under his command, that makes him a strong fighter, but also a reckless one. He is willing to take any burden to protect the people he cares about, whether it be killing an enemy, or being killed himself. In accepting his role as the Chosen One, he's also accepted that he is less important than the causes and people he fights for, and, to avoid those he cares for being hurt, frequently undertakes tasks alone that might be better done as a team. He also makes decisions about things that affect others as well as himself without the input of those involved, such as his decision to take a suicide-mission in the future to protect Hope from sentinels, or leaving Hope in the hands of the Avengers to try and have a 'normal' life instead of keeping in contact with his adopted daughter.
» EXSILIUM INFORMATION
Chosen WEAPON: An Askani psimitar - a spear, roughly seven feet long, with a decorated metal and crystal triangular blade on one end. While perfectly functional as an ordinary spear, it's true strength is that it's designed to focus a telekinetic's blasts into stronger, more narrowly focused attacks.
It's first upgrade will be to act as a booster for for Nate's currently somewhat weakened psionic powers - his telepathy will have more reach while wielding it, and his telekinesis will be stronger.
It's second upgrade will be the ability to have the grip lengthen and shorten on telepathic command, to become a longer pole-arm, or down to unconventional-dagger length, for close combat
It's third upgrade will be the ability to hold a psionic 'charge' - it could be imbued with telekinetic energy before battle, and draw upon that for blasts instead of directly on Nate's own TK at the time, allowing him to use it for other things.
Character INVENTORY: One set of plain civilian clothing, including a long coat, in decent shape. Steel-toed combat boots (because who knows when you may have to kick a door in). Leather wallet with a small amount of US cash, a forged NY driver's license, and a photo clipped out of the paper of Hope (he's sentimental, and the future didn't have many cameras). Plain keyring with keys that all go to things back in his earth. Two switchblades, and a large-calibre handgun with concealed carry holster.

First PERSON: Hey. I hope you all aren't too tired of newcomer questions, because I've got two of my own. First off - is there a good place around here to train undisturbed? I keep odd hours - wouldn't want to wake anyone up.
Second - where's the best place to get a coffee? Or synth-caf, or whatever the equivalent is around here. Though I'm really hoping it's the real deal.
Third PERSON: Even with the bad arm, he still had two of them down before "Please, we just want to talk." registered all the way down. Typical. Nobody ever bothered to explain what they wanted before dragging him through dimensions - and from the way his stomach felt right now, probably across time, too. One of them had a tranq gun pointed at him, but looked decidedly unsure about the whole situation, and he was fairly certain he hadn't shot the second white-labcoat anywhere that'd kill him immediately, so. He let them talk. And while he desperately wanted everything they said to be a lie, to be just another apocalyptic nightmare he was dreaming, the worn-down spark of telepathy he still had said that no, unless they had a very powerful telepath countering all his reads, they believed what they said. Which didn't necessarily mean it was true, but it did lend them some credibility. Saving the world again. He was getting too old for this - but better him than putting Hope in the middle of another mess like this.
He let them keep talking, and even re-holstered his gun, as they moved through the facility. He nodded at all the right points - this sort of briefing, he could probably sleep through and still be fine - but while his new guide talked, he was mentally processing the more salient points of what she'd said. From the sound of it, whatever had divided this world was a matter of ideaology, rather than species. Which meant - no other mutants, probably. Though he'd have to ask around more discreetly about that once he was out of government buildings. As the saying went - it's not paranoia if they really are out to get you.
The idea of a weapon that could change to better suit it's wielder, though - that was a novel idea. Something biocoded to your own DNA, sure. Weapons that needed a certain type of mutant power to use. But a fuzzy-logic AI that could reconfigure on the fly, with no direct command prerogatives? That was out of his league, certainly - and possibly beyond some of Utopia's more advanced minds. And, well, the armory that was currently surrounding him was far vaster - and more varied - than he'd ever seen. Centuries of varied tech, all stuffed in one place. There was a bronze dagger hung next to a mid-range plasma rifle - early 27th century tech, at his guess.
They'd offered to convert one of his own, but two switchblades and a late 20th century semiauto handgun weren't really worth the effort. Bright Lady help him, he'd been going to get groceries. Even he wasn't crazy enough to go in visibly armed. Not when he planned on actually paying, anyway. So that meant picking something from their stock. A few of the short-burst heavy rifles seemed promising, but he wanted to have a good look around before making up his mind. Then he saw - well, something he hadn't expected to see again in this lifetime, much less this place. An Askani psimitar, nestled next to a rack of more ordinary polearms. It wasn't his psimitar - he could tell by the blade decoration, and the fact that it looked nearly unused. He took it down, and gave it an experimental one-handed swing. Well-balanced - which was good, as it was really designed to be a two-handed weapon. But he had the height and reach to use it one-handed for now. He pushed carefully on his telekinesis - that was wearing thin lately, too, but he didn't want to take a wall out either. But just enough, and the tip began to glow a dark magenta. Wherever they had found it, it was the real thing. He turned back to his guide, who was waiting by the doorway, and gave her the first smile he'd had since arriving here.
"I'll take this one."
» ADDITIONAL NOTES
Nate’s canonical power levels tend to swing sharply between ‘almost nothing’ and 'able to read the thoughts of every human simultaneously' depending on writer. I chose to use the limits he shows in his first solo series as they're high without being utterly ridiculous, and as he's fairly tapped out at the canon point I'm taking him from, they'll grow over a few months of development as he gets his strength back, up to levels that seem to fit best for the game without being overpowered. Same goes for his physical strength - having the techno-organic virus he’s had nearly since birth removed from his body has left varying degrees of muscle atrophy along his left side, as well as some problems with motor control in his left arm, not unlike that seen after a stroke. He’s also missing his right eye, as it had been completely converted to T-O.

[ PSIONICS PERMISSIONS ]
Feb. 13th, 2013 02:04 amBeing Read: Despite his somewhat... scattered psionic training, Cable has developed strong mental shields. A telepath around his own level trying to read him would get nothing, and possibly get some annoyed-telepath-backlash in return. A more skilled or powerful telepath than he is would have better results, and if his abilities are being blocked (drugs, power dampeners, head trauma), the matter becomes much easier.
He can also hide his presence entirely from telepaths (making him psionically 'invisible', rather than there but shielded), but this is an active ability rather than a passive one, and I'll do my best to mention when it's up.
Reading Others: For non-telepaths, Cable can usually do the following with very little effort: tell where people are without line of sight, get a general emotional read on a crowd, and read a specific person's surface thoughts without their knowledge. He does try not to do the last one without permission (having been shouted at more than once over it), but in wartime, the rules change.
Generally, for these basic things, I'll just keep infomodding to a minimum, and not ask every time. If your character is a telepath or otherwise shielded, please comment here, and let me know the type and extent of their shielding to basic reads. If as a player, you are uncomfortable with these things, also drop a comment here, and we can work out a handwavey exemption, or an alternative permission system.
Mental Wipe/Memory Alteration/Mind Control: I will always ask beforehand and work out details, because these are Big Deal powers. Conversely, if this is something you want to happen to your character, feel free to poke me and we can see if we can work out a scenario!
